My GrandMa wants a Facebook Account !
The rate at which social media is evolving in Nigeria is really interesting with dependents coming to the virtual social scene. There use to be a time when we only have ages 18 – 45 doing their things online. You remember the Hi5, Penpal and Myspace days ?
The story is no longer the same as dependents now have a strong participation in the scene. . . . . . they actually dominate over 40% of social networking in Nigeria. We now have younger than 17 years old and older than 65 years, all catching fun and hooking up with friends.
Though the fun could still be limited as Facebook has presently monopolized the social media scene, and we all have no choice than to deep our heads in the media magic, we rove around virtually day and night and also draw our friends in. Nigeria’s Facebook users recently crossed the 2 million users benchmark and it’s interesting that the figure is increasing every second. We are actually the largest in Africa.
Something caught my attention some days ago when I visited a friend of mine at home, we vividly discussed the importance of social media in digital marketing and how it can help in building brand awareness and at the same time increase returns on investment.
Facebook was our reference word as we mentioned it in every phrase and sentence . I suddenly noticed my friend’s Granny smiling at the laptop screen, not to embarrass her, I humorously asked her what she was smiling at . . . . . . and she replied with a big smile ” Come and See” . I stood up, went to her side and it was her pictures on Facebook when she was 20, 35 , 60 and 67. . . . . she is presently 71 years old.
My friend took his time to compile all her pictures, uploaded it on his Facebook account and engages the Granny any time he is less busy. Even though the Older Mama cannot operate a computer, she still finds joy in looking at the pictures, smiling and soliloquizing. We thrilled her when we showed her the pictures and videos of Family members and Friends on Facebook. You know old people now ! She won’t just let us go, she requested we search for wedding pictures, search for a friend of hers she lost contact with 40 years ago . Duh ? We tried explaining that Online Content is GIGO (Garbage in Garbage Out).
She finally allowed us to go on one request, ” To buy her a Laptop and a Facebook Account so that she can get pictures and talk with her old school friends. We agreed jokingly and told her she would start her Facebook tutorial next week.
Immediately we left the house, I told my friend that if a 71 year old Mama could be this addicted to Facebook just because of her past pictures she saw, then we still have more people to join the social media scene for whatever reason that would attract them.
If Facebook is still alive and active in the next 5 years, I can see over 10 million Nigerians on the platform.
Till then, Hasta Lavista.
President Goodluck Jonathan Declares Presidential Ambition via Facebook
I woke up this morning with the news that Nigerian’s President Dr. Goodluck Jonathan has declared his intention to contest in the January presidental elections. Well, it’s not a bad news to wake up afterall, but the most interesting thing about it is that he made his intention known via facebook. This makes him a brand to be sold to millions of Nigerians on facebook social media platform.
Fews years ago, when the internet bug caught us, few of us went to work with great passion to understand what the social media innovation has to offer us. Today the story has changed. We now have millions of people with diver backgrounds facebooking at different time and place.
The great potentials that lies in facebook Ad is great. Lets for once forget that facebook social media platform has a huge database which any person with good business sense can convert into profit.
President Goodluck Jonathan quite understands the richness of facebook social media platform and he is selling he’s selling himself on it.
For few weeks now, I have contantly seen President Goodluck Jonathan’s facebook Ad on the facebook social media platform and i’m not surprised he declares his ambition through such platform.
President Goodluck Jonathan’s single act of facebooking has only confirmed the magic in advertising through Facebook .
In this modern day digital world, facebook and other social networking sites are key in increasing profit as a company or in showcasing our brand. Every company knows the importance of product exposure in marketing. Products and services are for human consumption and use. Have you asked yourself why a company like MTN will want to spend Billions in advertising. They know the power behind exposure, and not just to few numbers of people but to millions.
Facebook social media platform is wonderful in projecting whatever you do as a company or as individuals. It projects to over 1. 7 million nigerians and If President Goodkuck Jonathan was selling bread, imagine the numbers of people that will see his products daily and also the millions that will buy bread from him.
Facebook Ad is not limited to view and click alone, millions of people will not click but copy the phone numbers on the advert and place a call. Don’t under-estimate the power of Facebook, no matter your kind of business.
As the 2011 elections moves nearer, politician are already flying adverts using different social media platforms. I’m sure one of this days you will see other popular Politicians taking lead.
I employ you to try the effectiveness of this Social Media as you move your business to the next level of growth !

Engaging the Power of Social Media to Maximise Profit in Your Business; A study of Facebook.
Facebook is the biggest online social networking site with over 500 million users as at 2nd quarter 2010, and over 5 billon status updates, comments and wall messages exchanged daily.
Nigerian Facebookers are not doing bad on the platform as we have over 1.7 million registered Nigerians within the age range 18-70. Even those without a profile page on FB are yearning to get one.
From the perspectives of a Digital Marketer, there is more to Facebook than just requesting for friendship, updating status, writing on co-users wall or stalking new faces. The huge database should not be left for just social networking as the integration of brand engagement Adverts into the platform would not only increase Brand Awareness of Company’s products and services but also create an engagement that would lead to High Returns on Investment.
With the introduction of Facebook Engagement Ads on the right hand side of a user’s homepage, adverts related to the user in terms of fashion, marital status and education would be randomly displayed to him.
Facebook Engagement Ad can be limited to a continent, country or leave it to display to the whole world at a relatively cheap price. Simply said, Advertising on Facebook will give you the opportunity to reach prospective buyers you cannot meet in real life, and the integration of Recommended/Like button into the advert will also create viral marketing by displaying the action of a user to all his friends. e.g when a user likes an engagement ad, it automatically displays on his profile page for friends to see. ” Ajayi Jacob Likes Tregeo Creatives”.
Though Facebook Engagement Ad could look simple to a non-digital advertiser, but I will advise you to hand it over to a Social Media Marketing Expert who will be able to research and work on the creatives and bidding.
Tregeo Creatives did a digital campaign for a clothing store in Lagos Nigeria (www.julicollections.com) and 350% ROI was recorded a week after the campaign was launched.

Social Media Ad is not only meant for companies and products, it can also be used to promote political campaigns, Nollywood Personalities or any legal things you enagage in.

Twitter Sets to Overtake Facebook as more Nigerians join the Tweet league
Before going through this post, write today’s date in your diary, and also biro check today in the year 2012 . . . . . .we need to project ahead. Right ?
There is no doubt that Facebook is the leader of the Social Networking sites on the internet and the 2nd most visited online site according to Alexa ranking. With over 500 million users and 1.7 million in the world and Nigeria respectively, Facebook is enjoying a patronage that has never been witnessed back in the days of web 1.0 and also in this day of web 2.0, but we should not close our eyes to the fact that technology is a sorcerer who can vomit unthinkable and unexpected innovations at anytime.
5 year ago, Web surfers never believed there could be any innovations that would send Hi5, MySpace, Friendster and lots of other Social Sites into the abyss. Suddenly Facebook came to the scene and less than 3 years became the Hero of Social Media.
Though many innovations are on the way but the one that catches my attention daily is Twitter. This is also a social networking site that allows you to tweet every second activity of what is happening to you with just 140 words. You can follow other Tweeps, same way you have followers.
Twitter was founded a decade ago but did not do well until facebook came to the scene of “update your status”. I actually signed up on Twitter in 2006 and getting someone to follow was hell. I ended up suspending the account with only 1 follower which happened to be my room mate back in school, it was really difficult to see Nigerians actively involved in Tweeting.
The story changed in 2009 as Twitter fixed some kinks in their system and embarked on an aggresive campaign coupled with the integration of status update on Facebook via third party applications like Selective Tweet, Tweet Deck, UberTwitter etc
The Introduction of Twitter Application on High end phones like iphones, android and blackberry also facilitated the growth of the application globally.
Presently, Twitter has almost 200 million registered users and over 3 million daily sign ups. The story is not really different in Nigeria as the Twitter Fever is catching-up with many people. Though the figure of Nigerians on Twitter is still low compared to Facebook, but I can tell you that most people using both social sites even enjoy Tweeting to Facebooking.
Twitter’s interactiveness is so smooth that you won’t want to sign out of the instant updates from friends, mentors and role models.
Most of our Artistes now share their home with twitter as they can’t just do without tweeting. . . . . . .same with some of our political leaders and corporate organizations.

The BlackBerry Craze in Nigeria ! Are you Paranoid ?

The rate at which every Amina, Titi and Chidinma is desperate to get a BB phone in Nigeria is appalling and something should be done quickly before ladies turn to ten a penny for something that is not worthwhile.
Even the guys are not left out in this hurdle as they end up using part of their life savings to acquire a gadget they cannot fully maximize. Ask Research In Motion (RIM), there is more to a BB than just flaunting it around town and requesting for everyones BlackBerry Pin in a wretched and poverty stricken manner.
Well, is no news that BlackBerry is now the reigning thing in the country and if you don’t have it, then you are not just there, why must you keep up with the Joneses when you can make do with better and cheaper phones with no monthly BIS.
I have no grudge against the use of Blackberry phones but I think it should be done in a more mature way. . . . . . . Blackerry is not luxury, it is communication gadget, not something to flaunt or use for personal hyping. Using a BB should affect your life and business positively since you can deliver information on the go.
Chikena !
I followed a Twitter thread #OnlyInUnilag last 2 days and Laugh Wan Kill Me Die (LWKMD) as ladies and gents tweeted funny but true tweets like;
Only in Unilag will a girl have 3 BlackBerry Phones without BIS on any.
Only in Unilag with a girl and her roommate share BB pin.
Only in Unilag will a girl tell a guy that if he doesn’t have a BB, he should back off.
You can read more on http://www.twitter.com , just search for #onlyinunilag
The early morning BRT Buses to CMS in Lagos are not left out in this game, immediately corporate peeps settle down, the next thing is hold your BB with your two hands and chat through the journey, atleast they are workers and they can afford the monthly thingy even though most of them have no definition for right use.
Imagine someone paying N5,000 on BB and all he could do till the subscription expired was to chat on Facebook!
Conclusively, the introduction of Blackberry phones into the Nigerian Market is right on target in a period when most people have no time to sit on their desktop or move their laptop around. With your BB, you can effectively communicate on any platform without risking the carriage of heavy gadget. Aside from this, it has also encouraged Internet usage amongst many Nigerians who don’t really fancy going online.
Immediately you have a BB, then start thinking of sharing your BBM (BlackBerry Messenger) with your loved ones so tht you can atleast enjoy something free from Research in Motion, but wait. . . . . . what is the usefulness of a BB without BIS ?

Here Comes Twitter. Growing at an Alarming rate !

Mobile marketing professionals have been told that Twitter’s mobile user numbers have increased by 62 per cent since April.
It comes after the social networking website attempted to make it easier for smartphone users to use the service on their handsets.
According to Neil Turner, a blog posting by Twitter said that 16 per cent of all new users were using it via their phone, with a further 46 per cent opting to send their tweets from their mobile handset on a regular basis.
Furthermore, it found that the iPhone and BlackBerry phones were the most popular devices that the service was used on.
Evan Williams, co-founder and chief executive of Twitter, said: “Just over four months ago at our Twitter developer conference … one major area of difficulty I highlighted was getting Twitter on your phone. We did iPhone user tests and confirmed that even though there was a plethora of third-party apps, people were having trouble finding and selecting one because none were called ‘Twitter’.”
The social networking service has recently been in the news, with England cricketers Kevin Pietersen and Dimitri Mascarenhas getting into hot water over comments that they recently made on Twitter.
The good thing is that Nigerians are not left out of this Tweeting Revolution as most of our Celebs in the Political, Religious, Media and Entertainment scenes are regular Tweeters.
Some of them are Raji Fashola, Rita Dominic, Don Jazzy, Ali Baba, Tosyn Bucknor, Chris Oyakilome etc, You can also start tweeting today by visiting www.twitter.com
